When is the best time to travel to China?
Short answer · verified 8 September 2026
The useful version of this question is when not to go. China's public holidays are set by one State Council notice each year and they move the whole country at once: National Day is 1–7 October 2026 and Spring Festival ran 15–23 February 2026, nine days. In those weeks trains sell out, sites queue for hours and hotel prices spike. Avoid them and most of the year works. The 2027 calendar is normally published around November 2026.
The calendar that actually decides it
Most "best time to visit China" advice is about weather. In practice the thing that will change your trip is the public holiday schedule, because China's holidays are nationally synchronised. They are not a rolling season — they are the same nine days for everyone, and roughly a billion people become able to travel simultaneously.
The State Council General Office publishes the whole year in one notice. For 2026, notice 国办发明电〔2025〕7号 of 4 November 2025:
| Holiday | 2026 dates | Days | Make-up working days |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Year | 1–3 January | 3 | 4 January |
| Spring Festival | 15–23 February | 9 | 14 and 28 February |
| Qingming | 4–6 April | 3 | — |
| Labour Day | 1–5 May | 5 | 9 May |
| Dragon Boat | 19–21 June | 3 | — |
| Mid-Autumn | 25–27 September | 3 | — |
| National Day | 1–7 October | 7 | 20 September, 10 October |
Two of these matter far more than the rest.
National Day, 1–7 October. The single busiest travel week of the year. High-speed rail sells out weeks in advance, headline sites run at capacity, and hotel rates in tourist cities rise sharply. Note that Mid-Autumn falls 25–27 September in 2026, three days before it — a stretch of heavy travel across late September and early October rather than one clean week.
Spring Festival, 15–23 February in 2026. Nine official days, but the migration around it is much longer in both directions. It is the largest annual movement of people anywhere. Many small businesses and family-run restaurants close for a week or more, which changes what is actually open where you are going.
The notice itself asks employers to encourage staggered travel, which tells you how acute the crowding is.
Working around it, not against it
You do not have to avoid the holidays entirely — you have to avoid moving during them.
- Do not travel on the first or last day of a holiday. The crush is concentrated at both ends. Being already somewhere on day one is very different from trying to get there.
- Book rail well ahead if your dates touch a holiday. Chinese high-speed rail releases seats on a fixed schedule and popular routes clear quickly.
- Cities empty as tourist sites fill. Migrant workers leave the big cities for Spring Festival, so Shanghai and Shenzhen can be unusually quiet while scenic areas are packed.
The one weather fact we will state
The UK's travel advice puts the typhoon season on China's southern and eastern coasts from May to November. That affects coastal cities and islands, not the interior.
Beyond that, we are not going to publish a month-by-month table. China runs from subarctic Heilongjiang to tropical Hainan, and any single "best month" for the whole country is a guess dressed as advice. Pick your region first, then check a forecast for it.
Next year
The 2027 arrangement had not been published when we last checked this page. The State Council issues it as a single notice, normally around November, and we update this page when it appears.
Once you have your dates, the next question is whether you need a visa for them — that is in Do I need a visa to travel to China? — and what stops working when you land, which is in the China travel guide.
What we could not verify
- Region-by-region climate recommendations. China spans roughly 50 degrees of latitude and several climate zones, and we have no single authoritative dataset we could cite for a month-by-month table across all of it. We give the holiday calendar and the typhoon window, both of which are published, and leave the weather to a forecast for the specific place you are going.
- The 2027 holiday dates. The State Council publishes the following year's arrangement in a single notice, normally around November. Nothing for 2027 had been published when we last checked.
